Fake Bank Calls & Helpline Spoofing
The Threat: A major financial fraud currently targeting Pakistanis is “Bank Helpline Spoofing.” You receive a call from a number that looks exactly like your bank’s official helpline (e.g., 111-xxx-xxx). The caller sounds professional, speaks fluently, and claims there is a “security issue” or your “ATM card is blocked.”
How the Scam Works: The scammer uses technology to “mask” their real number with the bank’s helpline number. They ask for your Internet Banking Username, Password, and the OTP (One-Time Password) sent to your phone. They might even recite your CNIC or Date of Birth to gain your trust. Once they get the OTP, they transfer all funds from your account within seconds.
Safety Tips for Safer.pk Readers:
• Banks Never Ask for OTP: No legitimate bank official will ever ask for your password, PIN, or OTP over a phone call.
• Helplines are for Receiving, Not Calling: Official bank helplines are primarily designed for customers to call in. If you get a call from a helpline number asking for sensitive data, hang up immediately.
• Call Back Yourself: If you are worried about your account status, hang up and manually dial your bank’s official number yourself from their website or the back of your ATM card to verify.
Today’s Security Rule: Your OTP is like your blank cheque signature. Never give it to anyone on a call.
